Choosing the Right Maternity Bra for Pregnancy

Pretty Convertible Bra - Yummy Mummy Lingerie

From the moment you conceive your baby, your body will begin to change and changes in the breast can start to occur within the first couple of weeks.  Throughout the pregnancy, your breasts will continue to grow and may become tender as the milk glands expand in preparation for breastfeeding once the baby is born.

Why wear a maternity bra?

There are many different styles and designs of maternity bras available and it can be overwhelming choosing the best one to suit your needs and body shape.  Wearing a supportive bra during your pregnancy can help reduce the stretching of tissues that can result in sagging. Maternity bras are also specifically designed for the changes your breasts will make providing breast and diaphragm support.

And once the baby is born, the drop cups that are a feature of the maternity bras make it easy for breastfeeding your baby.

Can I wear underwire bras?

Underwire fashion bras are not recommended for use during your pregnancy due to the changing breast shape. A soft cup is less restrictive and will allow for growth. For example, retained fluid in late pregnancy can cause the breasts to swell and although the change will usually only be minor, the rigid underwire may put too much pressure on the breast.

How do I look after my bras?

You will need at least 2 good quality maternity bras. Bras should be hand-washed in mild washing detergent and hung out to air dry immediately in a shaded area. Don’t hang the bra’s on the line by the straps as they will stretch out of shape. Instead hang them over the line in the centre of the bra cups so that they retain their shape.

How should they fit?

When shopping for your maternity bras, ultimately you want them to be comfortable but they need to encase the breast both at the sides and the décolletage. The bra should feel like it is supporting the breasts and there should be no back or shoulder discomfort. The material should feel soft and non-abrasive on your skin. The back fastening should be on the tightest or second tightest fitting to allow for expansion as your baby grows.

Here at Yummy Mummy Lingerie we have a great range of maternity bras to suit all shapes and sizes. And if the size isn’t correct we accept exchanges and refunds (conditions apply).
